About

This advanced workshop offers an afternoon of talks and discussion on how learning and attention shape human cognition and behavior. The aim is to bring together students and researchers interested in these topics and to provide an accessible but research-oriented overview of current work in the field.

The programme combines several invited talks with a closing lecture by Professor Mike Le Pelley, covering topics such as:

  • Learning and attention in humans
  • The automaticity of visual statistical learning
  • Experimental research of human habits
  • The role of mind wandering in implicit statistical learning

The event is in person, free of charge, and especially intended for:

  • Master’s and PhD students in psychology, cognitive science, and related areas
  • Early-career researchers interested in attention, learning, and decision making

Participants who register via the registration form, and attend the talks, will receive a certificate of attendance.

Experimentally investigating the formation of human habits: It is hard, but we are getting there
Habits
Cognitive control

According to learning theory, if a given response is experienced as a stable predictor of reward for an extended period of time, we can then free up cognitive resources for other purposes by relinquishing control to our habit system (putting it on…

No free lunch: Visual statistical learning depends on selective attention and possibly on working memory resources as well
Visual Statistical Learning
Automaticity

Visual statistical learning is often seen as an automatic process, largely independent from explicit knowledge and attentional resources. Consistent with this view, several influential studies show that contextual cueing, a particularly popular visual…

Prediction and prioritisation: Reward learning modulates automatic attentional priority
Visual attention
Reward learning

A traditional view of selective attention distinguishes between goal-directed and stimulus-driven mechanisms of attentional control. More recently, a large (and growing) body of research has identified a third class of control system—termed selection…

Mind wandering as a modulator of inhibitory control and implicit statistical learning
Mind Wandering
Statistical Learning

Mind wandering (MW) is often regarded as a state of mind associated with impaired cognitive performance, yet recent studies suggest it plays a surprising, adaptive role in statistical learning, the implicit acquisition of environmental regularities. Our…

By bus

  • Buses U1, U2, U3 and 8 will take you directly to the CIMCYC entrance (stop “Facultad de Farmacia”).You can board them at any of the stops along these lines (map here).

  • A single ticket costs €1.40 and is valid for 60 minutes.

By car

  • You can reach the campus from the ring road (A-92 / A-44) that surrounds Granada, which helps avoid city-centre traffic during peak hours.
